Import / Export

According to the most recent (provisional) data of the Hellenic Statistical Authority, the total value of exports for 2021 amounted to €39,894.6 million, compared to €30,800.2 million in 2020, presenting a significant 29.5% increase. Excluding petroleum products, the exports during the same period presented a 19.7% increase (€28,869.1 million compared to €24,126.1 million in 2020), whereas excluding petroleum products and shipping the increase amounted to 19.9% (from €23,968.6 million to €28,746.0 million).

Fuel has the largest share of exports for 2021 (28.2%) followed by industrial products classified according to raw material (15.6%), food products (14.8%) and chemicals (14.2%).

Regarding imports, the total value of imports during 2021 amounted to €64,190.2 million, compared to €48,953.8 million during the same period in 2020, presenting a 31.1% increase. Excluding petroleum products, the increase during the same period amounted to 20.1% (from €39,622.2 million to €47,596.4 million), whereas excluding petroleum products and shipping it amounted to 20.5% (from €39,389.3 million to €47,446.9 million).

Fuel has the largest share of imports for 2021 (approximately 26.4% of imports) followed by transport material and machinery (19.2%) and chemicals (17.0%).

 

Destination Countries (2021)

Exports to the European Union (EU) amounted to 53.7% during 2021, demonstrating its special weight in Greek export trade. A dynamic increase of Greek exports in 2021 occurred to the following countries: Italy, Germany, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Turkey, Lebanon, Libya, South Korea, Saudi Arabia etc.

    • Cyprus (6.4%)
    • Turkey (5.8%)
    • Bulgaria (5.0%)
    • France (4.4%)

 

Countries of Origin (2021)

The EU is also an important import trade partner of Greece, with a share of approximately 51.2%.

    • Germany (12.4%)
    • Italy (9.0%)
    • China (7.7%)
    • Russia (6.3%)
    • Iraq (6.0%)
    • Netherlands (4.4%)

 

Total Foreign Trade

The total of the foreign trade of goods transactions (imports + exports) of Greece amounted to €104,084.8 in 2021. The exports of goods are lower than the imports, however large part of the trade deficit (which increased by 33.8% in 2021) is covered, mainly by the export of services like shipping, tourism, financial services, etc.
